The Government Requirements to Meet In Order To Be a Certified Nursing Assistant
When you start working towards becoming a certified nursing assistant, you have to keep in mind that there is more involved in getting than getting your education and passing an exam (though obviously these things are important). There are licensing requirements to meet in order to get and maintain your license. These requirements will change a little from state to state, but overall requirements are always the same and must be kept in mind.
State Education Requirement
A college level education is required to start with before you work as a CNA. There is about 75 hours to complete and sixteen of those hours will be completed in a real world, clinical setting so that you can turn what you learned from your books into something that you use hands-on.
In order to be fully certified, you will have to pass a two part exam: a written and practical exam. The written part takes about two hours and is composed of 200 multiple choice questions. The practical exam will test your ability to handle real world situations such as caring for you patient in a dignified manner and basic skills like CPR. In order to be certified, you have to pass both the written and the practical portions of the exam.
Post Education
Your work isnt done once youve been certified. Most state requirements include fulfilling X-amount of hours per year in continuing education; on average about twelve. These extra hours can be done by taking courses on things related to your field, such as learning how to use a piece of equipment, computers, or learning new terminology. The reason for this is because the medical field is always changing and its best to stay abreast of it.
These are just the most basic requirements to get licensed, but some states have additions to this. It's important to check your state requirements while you are working towards becoming a certified nursing assistant so that you don't miss anything or else you could end up behind or wasting time and money.
