This is more of a general comment but I'm placing it under Value Chain Analysis section since majority of VC weaknesses and advantages are discovered during this process.

Can major sections of the chain be eliminated and replaced with information?

One of the reasons that IT is so powerful and its use so widespread is that most of the major inputs in the production of goods and services: labor, energy, material, space and time can, to varying degrees, be replaced by information. What are some of experiences from specific projects and to what extent should information be pushed as replacing component of value chains considering that it probably takes responsibilities away from small scale service providers and businesses?
